What Are Chemical Peels?

Dull, tired, or damaged skin can add years to your actual age and compromise your appearance. Chemical peels, professionally administered at MaVie Medical Spa, is a great starting point for someone who wishes to reverse signs of aging and refresh your skin complexion.

In healthy skin, the epidermal layer or the topmost layer of skin contains old, dead skin cells that are shed periodically. The skin’s younger cells in the deeper layer are pushed to the surface to take their place. This is what is considered to be a natural cellular turnover process.

As a result of sun damage, aging, illnesses, or other health conditions, this process can become ineffective and the cycle of cellular turnover can be disrupted. This results in the accumulation of dead skin cells that leaves the surface of the skin looking tired and dull.

As the name suggests, these “peels” contain chemicals that exfoliate the dead and damaged skin cells on a deeper level than manual exfoliation can provide. Chemical peels typically contain a type of acid such as alpha-hydroxy, salicylic or glycolic acids. After your chemical peel is applied, the chemicals begin the exfoliation process and new skin cells are then produced.

The Chemical Peel Treatment Process

Chemical peels are applied by licensed and certified professionals at MaVie Med Spa. After cleaning your face thoroughly, a suitable chemical peel is applied. It is common to experience a mild burning, heat or tingling sensation that resolves with time.

The length of time the chemical peel is allowed to remain on the skin is determined by our specialists by carefully observing skin changes. You can expect mild discomfort/heat during and immediately after the treatment but this is temporary.

With light peels, there is no downtime, but you will require additional treatments for optimal results. With deep peels, you may experience moderate to severe peeling depending of the peel used. Sun restrictions will apply and aftercare instructions will be given by your provider. The fall, winter and spring months are the best times to take advantage of chemical peels, but a gentle peel can be performed during summer months as well. This can be discussed with your aesthetic provider to ensure safety and optimal outcomes.

The treatment time can take anywhere between 30 to 60 minutes.
